Tony Spilotro might be best known for his success in protecting the Las Vegas casino rackets, but he started out like so many other Mafiosi: as a low-level gangster in Chicago. He even opened his own shop, The Gold Rush, with brother Michael to sell his stolen stuff. When news about the body in the barrel at Lake Mead broke, the first name to come to mind for many longtime Las Vegans was George Jay Vandermark, who vanished in 1976 while being pursued by the Outfit. They buried the brothers, sans barrels, in an Indiana cornfield. After dropping out of high school to dabble in shoplifting, Spilotro became an enforcer for the Chicago Outfit. According to former Willow Springs, Illinois, police chief Michael Corbitt, statements by Outfit Capo Sal Bastone implicated Spilotro in the murder of former Chicago Outfit boss Sam Giancana.
